The Old Guardian is a non-playable character and possible unique enemy in Fear & Hunger.

Lore

"The figurine created by the older gods to protect the golden temple of the true king. He has seen millennia go by, but still the fool waits for a false prophecy."
- The New Gods when asked about the Old Guardian.

The figurine was created by the Old Gods to protect the Golden Temple of the True King. The figurine still waits for the True King to come back and take his true throne. It has been a millennia since, and he still continues to wait for a 'false prophecy'. Presumably, he might have fought the Fellowship for their right to enter the Golden Temple of the True King. He eventually starts to believe he might not be worth the King's audience, and asks for the player to engage in a battle to the death as a means of confirmation.

Location and behaviour

If interacted with in the past version of Ma'habre, the Old Guardian will not be hostile, simply sharing lore on the ancient city with the player.

In the present version of Ma'habre, he will relocate to the bridge area, looking at the horizon out to the darkness. After noticing the player's presence, he will start a fight.

Using a Soul stone on the Old Guardian's body will guarantee the player an Old Guardian soul. Should the character with the soul equipped take a fatal blow (or multiple within the same turn), they will instead survive with 1 Body. The soul then vanishes at the end of the turn.

Strategy

He fights with his fists and feet. He can only deal blunt damage, so armour can be chosen to maximize this type of defence. The player must also be aware of his Axe Kicks, as this attack can cause fracture.

His torso has the lowest health pool out of any body part, therefore it is better to just focus on the torso with a decent party.

If earlier in the game, you destroy the Nameless Figurine’s arms, the Old Guardian will also be missing his arms. (Bug)

It is possible to use En Garde during the cutscene before the fight to gain an extra turn at the start of the battle, though the timing is tricky.
