The Guard (Ballista), also known as just Ballista, is a variation of the regular Guard, is an enemy encountered in Fear & Hunger.

Lore

The Kingdom of Rondon enlisted these guards to serve within the prisons of the dungeons of fear and hunger. Their allegiance appeared to lie under the command of Captain Rudimer.

As the madness emanating from the dungeons began to diffuse, these very guards who patrolled its corridors would inevitably fall prey to its influences. Those who evaded the clutches of death at the hands of the Dark Priests would eventually find themselves succumbing to the madness and committing horrors against each other. The remaining men are now characterized by their formidable physical might and insatiable lust, which are hindered only by their loneliness.

The guards possess a distorted and muscular physique, marked by deformities. However, their most prominent feature is the transformation of their reproductive organs into a massive, seemingly bladed appendage, aptly referred to as a "stinger."

Location

This enemy can be encountered in Level 3 - Prisons, where he is able to employ a ballista to target the player even outside of combat if they get within shooting range, and in Level 6 - Mines, where he patrols the area leading to the Shark teeth.

Shooting a Ballista-wielding Guard with Iron arrows will remove his left leg and his stinger instead of his arms. Note that if the player wears the Guard outfit, this entity will not become aggressive.

Strategy

The Guard wielding the ballista uses both of his hands to hold the weapon and does not have a coin flip attack. Instead, he spends the first turn loading an arrow to shoot, giving the player time to kill him within two turns. It is typically not possible to see if a Guard is a meat cleaver or ballista variant without engaging in battle (with the exception of the guard standing behind a ballista). If the player's party cannot deal 450 damage within two turns then it is a good idea to run from the Guard and use a Bear Trap on him, making the head immediately vulnerable.

The Guard will sometimes use Stinger Thrust with his stinger, which deals 36-54 piercing damage.
