The Red man is an enemy encountered in Fear & Hunger.

Lore

He who suffered the torture of the tormented one for hundreds of years. With every passing year its pain grows stronger.
- The New Gods when asked about the Red man.

For centuries, the Tormented One has subjected this massive humanoid creature, bound by chains around his ankles, to ceaseless torture. The agony inflicted upon him intensifies over time. Possessing immense strength, his chilling screams reverberate in the places he roams. Little is understood about him except for the intriguing detail that his red skin has a resilient texture.

Location

Two Red men can be found crawling and wandering the Tombs of the Gods while in the past timeline in Ma'habre. A third one is found chained in the empty halls of the Temple of Torment, also in the past.

If the Red man crawls over a Bear trap, it will remove his right arm; a second Bear trap will then remove his left arm. The chained Red man at the Temple of Torment is immune to out-of-battle damage, as both Bear traps and Iron arrows will have no effect on him.

Red man takes 115% damage from the Piercing damage type.

He uses Red grasp as his primary attack, which deals low damage and has a minor chance to stun the player. He also has Shivering scream, an attack that deals Mind damage. If the Red man's right arm is left undestroyed, it will launch a special coin flip attack every two turns that can instantly kill the player. However, this can be avoided by guarding.

His head should be the primary target, as it has low HP and can easily be aimed at right away.

He drops nothing and cannot be skinned or devoured.

Dialogue

In combat:

  • If talked to:
    • You try talking some sense to this monstrosity...
    • Player: "What is your origin?"
      • The red man just breathes heavily while trying to reach for you.
      • Fortunately it's ankle chains constrain it's movements.
    • Player: "Please don't!"

      • The tormented one takes a step towards you.
    • Player: "Prepare to die."

      • Fortunately it's ankle chains constrain it's movements.
  • If the player fails to avoid his coin flip attack:
    • It grabs your ankle just barely, but it's enough. You are caught.
    • The red man now takes a hold of you with both of its arms.
    • The red man's crushing grasp is too much for any mortal to handle.
    • You are crushed by its intense force.

Trivia

  • Picking the "Please don't!" dialogue option during fight with the Red man yields an extra line of dialogue directly lifted from the Tormented One's battle. It is unclear whether or not this was intentional.
