"Like all mages, apprentices and priests - I strive for personal growth and for greater power."

The Yellow mage is an enemy in Fear & Hunger. In Fear & Hunger 2: Termina, one yellow mage, O'saa, is playable and potentially recruitable.

Lore

Yellow mages are mysterious people who worship and channel the blood magic of the old god of destruction, Gro-goroth.

They, practitioners of magic hailing from Eastern Sanctuaries, are known for their flamboyant and colorful attire. Unlike priests who devote themselves to worship, yellow mages use their occult powers to further their own interests and agendas, viewing Gods as simply existing in their world. Rather than finding order in the commandments of older Gods, yellow mages embrace chaos as a natural state that the world returns to periodically.

Nas'hrah, a New God who was once sultan of Eastern Sanctuaries, is credited with the creation of the yellow mages. Nas'hrah was known for being extremely power-hungry and studied in blood magic, concepts that he passed on to his sect of followers: the average relationship between a master yellow mage and their apprentice is one that encourages the pursuit of personal ambition and greed. Yellow mages are expected to prioritize their own desires above all else, and this philosophy is reflected in the way that masters guide their apprentices.

Yellow mages' connection with Gro-goroth is not based on religion, but rather on observation. They believe that among the Old Gods, the presence and influence of Gro-goroth are the most powerful and palpable to this day. In their view, Gro-goroth has the most to offer, as it is impossible to satisfy all deities at the same time.

Although many of their practices and customs remain unexplored, it is understood that the yellow mages' ideology prohibits them from wielding guns.

In present times, yellow mages exist in small, scattered groups traveling the world in search of knowledge in all areas of the otherworldly. It is revealed through dialogue with O'saa that their presence has been slowly fading over the years. They practice the traditional dance known as La Danse Macabre, which allows them to channel otherworldly powers that are close at hand.

Location & behaviour

There are two yellow mages in the game, and both of them are found in the Mines. Should a yellow mage spot the player outside of combat, he will immediately begin casting the spell Hurting. The player have approximately two and half seconds to either move far out of range (as he will not follow) or charge towards him and initiate combat. If the yellow mage finishes casting, the player will be inflicted with limb-loss.

Players should be aware that any limb protecting items will not prevent from the limb-loss effect on the overworld and escaping the yellow mages will not reset their spell casting animation, causing an immediate spell hit. To prevent the yellow mage from casting in the overworld, the player must either kill him or take out both of his legs, then escape.

Strategy

It is recommended to cut one leg off straight away to prevent him from using Hurting (capable of destroying limbs), as this stops his ritual dance. Then, destroy his left arm to prevent him from using Locust swarm. He will cast Hurting the turn after he begins his ritual dance if you do not cut at least one leg.

The player can also acquire the Eclipse Talisman through talking with the yellow mage, which is required to recruit Nas'hrah and Enki. It's best to pacify the yellow mage before talking to the mage otherwise he will keep attacking after being talked to. Ask the yellow mage 'Which gods do you serve?' and answer 'Gro-goroth', allowing the player to ask the yellow mage to teach them when talked to again. He will explain he is not at the level of knowledge to pass on such matters and tells the player to find his master, Nas'hrah, after which he will give the Eclipse Talisman.

Should the player party destroy both of the yellow mage's legs and escape, they will become harmless in overworld.

Dialogues

Talk

  • You try talking to the yellow mage...
    • Player: “What is your origin?”
      • Yellow mage: “...It matters not.”
      • Yellow mage: “I am but a pawn in the greater scheme of things.”
      • If already asked and answered question regarding gods from a different yellow mage:
      • Yellow mage: “Seems like you already talked to my brother in mysticism. So you must know who I am and what I am about.”
    • Player: “Which gods do you serve?”
      • Yellow mage: “I channel destruction, so isn't it obvious?”
        • Player: “Gro-goroth?”
          • Yellow mage: “Correct. You are not completely misguided.”
        • Player: “Sylvian?”
          • Yellow mage: “You are way off with your childish guessing games.”
        • Player: “Alll-Mer?”
          • Yellow mage: “Alll-Mer is much too recent being for my respect.”
        • Player: “New gods?”
          • Yellow mage: “Are you mocking me?”
    • Player: “What are you doing here?”
      • Yellow mage: “This is part of my training. I am still too ignorant about the greater scheme of things.”
    • Player: “Prepare to die.”
      • Yellow mage: “Likewise.”

After answering Gro-goroth:

  • You try talking to the yellow mage...
    • Player: “Why serve Gro-goroth?”
      • Yellow mage: “Traces left of Gro-goroth are the strongest among older gods. No other ancient being is still so vivid in this day and age.”
      • Yellow mage: “Like all mages, apprentices and priests - I strive for personal growth and for greater power. Gro-goroth has the most to offer.”
      • Yellow mage: “And you cannot please all of them, now can you?”
    • Player: “Can you teach about Gro-goroth?”
      • Yellow mage: “I am not at a level to pass on knowledge of such matters.”
      • Yellow mage: “Seek out my master - Nas'hrah of the East if you desire to learn more.”
      • Yellow mage: “Here, if you are to survive my blood magic, show this talisman to my master and show great humility. He might just listen to you.” (You got an Eclipse talisman!)

After obtaining the Eclipse talisman from conversation:

  • You try talking to the yellow mage...
    • Player: “Can you teach about Gro-goroth?”
      • Yellow mage: “We are done talking now.”
