"The fool has travelled wide and far, but has gotten no wiser."
- New Gods when asked about the Nameless.

Nameless is a non-playable character and a possible unique enemy from Fear & Hunger. He will not let the player pass through to the Golden Temple until they pass three trials.

Lore

Nameless is one of the everlasting clay figurines forged by the Old Gods to populate the streets of Ma'habre. As recounted by the New Gods, this particular figurine had traveled far and wide. At present, he is said to serve little use as he has "gotten no wiser".

In the past version of the ancient city, a diminutive Nameless can be discovered, nurturing a desire to become the city's guardian once grown. Nameless expressed aspirations to attain a level of strength akin to that of a "big brother," likely alluding to the Old Guardian.

In the present version of Ma'habre, standing at the gateway of the Golden Temple of the True King, the now much larger figurine finally assumes the role of a sentinel. He holds the responsibility of judging the worthiness of individuals aspiring to sit upon the Throne, engaging in combat with those who have proven themselves worthy by completing his trials. Once one fights fight him, and he will say that hundreds of years without anyone passing by made him feel like his mind was already lost. He thanks the challenger for waking him up, and proclaims he will "duel to the last figurine standing".

Warning! Speculation ahead!

Information below is hinted on, but wasn't directly confirmed in-game.

The established events within the Fear & Hunger lore suggest that the Throne of the Golden Temple was used in Le'garde's ascension as a New God. This also suggests that Nameless ultimately met his demise in the course of a consequential battle.

The Trials

The Nameless Figurine stands at the entrance to the Golden Temple. He will not let the player enter until they have acquired the Endless Soul, the Tormented Soul, and the Enlightened Soul.

The Endless soul can be acquired from Nilvan (The Endless One) at the Tower of the Endless. You must pass through a dream sequence accessed by sleeping in the bed, and defeat the Skin Granny at the end of it. Afterwards, Nilvan will appear and ask you to take her child to the Altar of Darkness, before giving her soul to the player character.

The Tormented soul can be acquired by killing Ronn Chambara (The Tormented One) within the Temple of Torment.

The Enlightened soul can be acquired by killing Valteil (The Enlightened One) within the Grand Library.

Alternatively, any of these souls can be either acquired from the player if they use an Empty scroll to obtain them or by simply killing all the specific recruitable characters that contain those souls.

Once the souls have been collected and presented before the Nameless Figurine, he will give the player and their party one last trial: a duel to the death. Be prepared to fight him. he will give the party all the time they need to prepare themselves. Luckily, there's a teleporter next to the figurine that one can use to go back to the past and stock up, or to leave Ma'habre and prepare elsewhere.

    • Player: "What do you mean by that?"
      • The figurine just repeats its speech.
      • The figurine doesn't seem to react to your question at all. Seems like his mind is lost with the time spent down in the darkness.

In combat:

  • If talked to:
    • You try talking some sense to this figurine...
    • Player: "What is your origin?"
      • Nameless Figurine: "I am the guardian of these gates. I am but a nameless figurine created for this very purpose.

      • Nameless Figurine: "If you wish to ascend to heavens, you have to show your worth first."
      • Nameless Figurine: "You can always back out of this encounter. I wouldn't think any lesser of you, if you did."
    • Player: "Please don't!"
      • Nameless Figurine: "Human..."
      • Nameless Figurine: "This is a voluntary encounter. I mean you no harm if you wish to back away."
    • Player: "Prepare to die."
      • Nameless Figurine: "Yes. That is what I was created for."
  • First turn:
    • Nameless Figurine: "Hundreds of years without anyone passing by... My mind was already lost..."
    • Nameless Figurine: "I thank you for waking me up."
    • Nameless Figurine: "Now let us duel to the last figurine standing."

Trivia

  • If the player picks the "What do you mean by that?" dialogue option when talking to the Nameless in the overworld, they are told that the figurine just repeats its speech. However, if they pick the "Where should I start?" option, the figurine actually repeats all of its dialogue. It is unclear whether or not this was intentional.
  • Both the Nameless and the Old Guardian have unused torso sprites with holes in them - what these may have been intended for is unknown.
