This page is about the Tormented One in Fear & Hunger. For his appearance in Fear & Hunger 2: Termina, see Tormented One (F&H2).

The Tormented One, also known as Ronn Chambara, is a major story character and boss encountered in Fear & Hunger. He was part of the Fellowship that sought out to become one of the New Gods.

Lore

"Also known as Ronn Chambara when he still walked among men as a mere mortal. Once a poet, he believes no great art can be achieved without pain and suffering. He now continues the same principals as a new god."
- The New Gods when asked about the Tormented One.

Ronn Chambara, once a mortal poet who embraced the belief that great art must be forged from pain and suffering, was a pivotal figure among the Fellowship, a group also formed by Francóis, Nilvan, Valteil, and Nosramus. Formed in 809, amidst the decline of kingdoms and the fading of ideals without the guidance of the Old Gods, the Fellowship embarked on a journey to Ma'habre in pursuit of the ancient deities.

Upon reaching their destination, all members of the Fellowship, save for Nosramus, ascended as New Gods. Chambara, in particular, rose to become the Tormented One. He transformed into a skinless being with chains that inflicted unending torture upon him for hundreds of years. In turn, he extended his pain and suffering to other creatures within the shrines of Ma'habre, including the Red Men. Despite his godhood, Ronn continued to uphold the same principles he held as a mortal poet.

According to the events portrayed in Fear & Hunger 2: Termina, the Tormented One was eventually defeated. He can be found alongside other inactive entities in Hall of the Gods, signaling the end of his reign as a deity.

Location

Chambara appears in the Temple of Torment after the player sacrifices either a husk or a party member.

A husk of the player's body can be made in a pit of a collapsed roadway in the present version of Ma'habre, the Ancient city, right to the chained angel - throw a stone to test out if it is the right location. The stone should fall somewhere nearby. Jump down, open the shortcut back to the alley on your right, then make your way to a room full of husks. Use the vat with the black liquid oozing out in the cave to make the husk. It will follow you to the Temple of Torment. There is a shortcut to the Temple past the husk room.

Approaching the Torrmented One will instantly trigger the first phase of his boss fight. During the first phase, he can use two different abilities: Pummel and Chains of Torment. Chains of Torment deals the most damage out of all his attacks, but he doesn't use it as often as his other ones.

After defeating the Tormented One in the first phase, blood would be flowing through the canals throughout the Temple of Torment which would fill a massive pit. Should the player try to exit the Temple, the Tormented One will rise from the pit of blood, beginning the second phase.

Chambara wielding the Wheels of Torment

During the second phase, the Tormented One wields the Wheels of Torment: three round, metal contraptions with spikes that orbit around Chambara. Each wheel would rotate during Chambara's turn in the boss fight. The wheels can only be stopped for one turn when a character attacks them. Defeating Chambara in this phase will allow the player to obtain the Tormented soul.

Strategy

It should be noted that the first encounter is not mandatory to initiate the second phase of the fight. To save resources, the player may simply run past the Tormented One during and after the machine puzzle, as the second encounter will initiate while attempting to leave the temple regardless of whether the boss has already been fought or not. Avoiding the boss might seem challenging, but it is possible to use bear traps to mitigate his pathfinding as well as directly luring him outside the puzzle room.

During first phase of the battle, there is a 50% chance of both arms doing nothing. The right arm will always attack through pummeling during early turns, however, and it should be taken out first. During the attacking move, the Tormented's pummeling will use two ticks of attack with both arms, potentially hitting an specific target up to four times; this attack however tends to amount to pretty small damage overall, so avoiding it shouldn't be a priority. The player should be aware that destroying both arms will cause the Tormented One to use Chains of torment, a very damaging spell which applies a guaranteed bleeding debuff as well as potential limb loss on the selected target.

During the second phase, the player must focus on attacking the wheels (Tier 3 and 2), as the boss has very high evasion and will only become fully vulnerable after jamming both wheels in the same turn; it is recommended that the player uses murky vials or explosive vials as they all hit multiple targets at once. The two outer wheels have a 50% chance of either doing nothing, or using the Revolution tear move, which will cause a decent amount of damage and has a 70% chance of inflicting the fracture debuff, plus a 20% chance of applying the infection status for arms and legs. The most threatening move will come from Chambara himself as he will be able to use the Chains of torment move during the entire fight, although there is still a 50% chance of him doing nothing each turn. It is highly recommended to apply the poison debuff on this entity during first phase as it will still carry over the next phase. The player may also use the Pheromones skill on the character with highest defense and health on the party to minimize risks even more.

After defeating the Tormented one in the blood pool in past Ma'habre, the player can then go to the present and return to the location where they sacrificed a husk or party member and find the tormented one laying down.

Interacting with him leads to the following interaction:

  • The tomented one is laying down here. Breathing heavily.
  • Seems like the time has worn him down. His body is parched and withered.
  • He doesn't appear to be able to do anything anymore...

Trivia

  • Game creator Miro Haverinen cites Hellraiser's Cenobites as the primary influence behind New Gods; this influence is particularly evident in the case of The Tormented One, whose skinless depiction and thematic focus on body horror align with the aesthetic and concepts found in Hellraiser.
  • Initially, Ronn Chambara and the Tormented One were intended to be separate characters. However, according to Haverinen, the narrative evolved to a point where merging their identities "just made too much sense."
  • The wheels of torment and its pool of blood are based upon the final boss arena of Silent Hill 4: The Room.
