Books presented in Fear & Hunger can be divided into five categories:

• Instructional: These books teach the player character crafting recipes.
• Academic: These books provide information about the world of Fear & Hunger.
• Occult: These books offer knowledge of otherwordly deities and powers.
• Letters and Diaries: Correspondence or personal articles found around the world that may add more context to current events.
• Special: Unique books with special functions.
• Treasure maps:

Some books have set spawn locations; others can be randomly obtained from the various lootable bookshelves throughout the dungeon.

It is to be noted that, while reading books in the overworld, sanity and hunger decay normally.
