"Your footsteps echo in the presence of the older gods."

The Church of Alll-mer is a major location in Fear & Hunger 2: Termina. It is a large church featuring Gothic architecture, many objects/symbols of worship to the ascended god Alll-mer and new god the Mourning One, and an expansive underground basement/dungeon.

Lore

Though the church takes on the appearance of worship to the ascended god Alll-mer, its true intentions are much darker. Its clergy continue the ancient practices of the dark priests in secret, conducting rituals to the Old Gods.[1] Those disfavored by the priests were exiled to Prehevil's poverty-stricken Old Town Old Town - Slums, [2] and through the use of an elevator the priests would take people from the slums and bring them to the church's basement or elsewhere for use as human sacrifices.

Priesthood appears to be patrimonial. Marina was born as the son of one of the more important priests, Father Domek, but her mother disguised her as a girl to keep her from being raised as a dark priest (a role she chose to maintain when she grew older as she felt more comfortable that way).[3]

Like the rest of the city, the Church fell under the influence of Rher during the Termina festival. At some point, a ritual gone wrong (likely intended for the Sulfur God) led to the summoning of Crimson Fathers, who slaughtered much of the congregation in the church's basement.[4]

Location

The church can be found in the centre of Prehevil - East. There is also an elevator in the basement allowing entry through the Crypts/Foundations of Decay, and after activating the elevator, Old Town - Slums.

Gameplay

The church's main floor is mostly peaceful and free of enemies, and there is a confession booth to the east of the main room where an unknown person will speak with the player. Regardless of how the conversation goes, the player will receive an affinity point with Alll-mer.

When exploring the rafters above, the player should take care not to step off of the wooden beams as it's possible to fall from them down to the ground floor, causing minor damage to the whole party with 20% chance to break the player's ankle, preventing sprinting until healed at a Sylvian ritual circle.

The effigies standing on the altar.

The altars found by the stained glass windows in the main area are crucial to progression. The Craftsman's notes will reveal that there's an underground passage leading to the 'renovation site' (presumably the Altar of the One God) and it has been sealed off to prevent theft, requiring three effigies that act as keys to be placed on their respective altars to unseal it. Since the Bremen military have built blockades on all of the roads leading to the temple district, typically the only way to get there is by passing through the Mausoleum Alley and Altar of the One God accessible via the sealed church passage. The location of the three effigies will be marked on the map after reading the Craftsman's notes, and are located in the following places:

The staircase to the church's basement will lead to a gate that is locked via a lever from the inside. If the player wishes to enter, one of three alternate routes must be taken:

  • Following the directions given in Craftsman's notes will lead to a hidden toolbox, containing Bolt cutters amongst other items. The player can go up to the rafters and either use these bolt cutters or a shot from a 12-gauge Trenchgun to break a large chain holding up a chandelier, which will cause it to fall and crash through the floor - creating a one-way entrance to the basement that you can drop down. Note that taking this route will make the room with the Rusty Key inaccessible due to the chandelier remains, locking the player out of fighting the Heartless One for the rest of the current playthrough.
  • Solving the control panel puzzle in the Sewage Treatment Plant will allow access to the Foundations of Decay. After going through the caves and reaching Tunnel 4, the player can climb up one of the elevator shafts to reach the Crypts, where the church elevator can be activated. The elevator can then be taken up to the church's basement or Old Town - Slums.
  • After reaching 3 affinity with Rher, the skill Golden Gates can be learned, allowing the player to enter golden gateways to travel between certain Rher dimensions. You can take any of the other Golden Gates to the church's main Rher dimension, and then exit to the basement from the pre-drawn sigil.

If entering the basement from the chandelier hole, the Church keys found on the corpse by the effigy will be required to exit, as the only way past the closed gates is through a hole in the wall of the Pillarman's cell.

NPCs

  • Samarie (Can be found in a cutscene with Father Domek on day 1 morning if the player hasn't entered the city through Tunnel 5, and will be hiding in the Rher dimension after the cutscene, or on day 1 morning if it was missed.)
  • Father Domek (Can only be found in the cutscene with Samarie on day 1 morning.)
  • O'saa (Can be found in the confession booth from day 1.)

    • O'saa: "Do you know what they say of Alll-mer in Abyssonia, my home country?"
    • O'saa: "He was just a one more fool trying to fly too close to the sun in the mankind's endless pursuit for power."
    • O'saa: "The people of Abyssonia don't see the need to reach for the sun. The sun is already harsh, merciless and too close for comfort."
    • O'saa: "Mankind's true place is to dwell in primordial chaos from where it originally srpung from."
    • If Marina is in the party:
      • O'saa: "A church of Alll-mer - the ascended one…"
      • O'saa: "Or at least coulisse of such."
      • Marina: "Why do you say 'coulisse'?"
      • O'saa: "It's not Alll-mer's traces that I sense here."
      • O'saa: "Oh no, the decrepit priests of Prehevil spilled their blood for something much sinister."
      • Marina: "Uh, what? What are you talking about?!"
      • O'saa: "..."
      • O'saa: "I'm not certain."

      • Marina: "Father... what on earth was going on here...?"
  • If Marcoh is in the party:

        • Marcoh: "But that's to be expected, right?"
        • Olivia: "Mm. I guess so..."
        • Marcoh: "You do pray for Alll-mer too, don't you?"
        • Olivia: "I didn't really have a religious upbringing..."
        • Marcoh: "Oh. You're one of those... 'atheists' then? That's the correct term?"
        • Olivia: "I wouldn't say that either."
        • Olivia: "I think religion has its place. It obviously can help some when they need it the most..."
        • Olivia: "For me... I like the traditional aspect of it."
        • Olivia: "Religious practises can bring festivity to even more mundane of events."
        • Olivia: "I couldn't imagine funerals and weddings without the traditions that originate from religious practises."
        • Olivia: "I just like all that... More than actually dedicating my life to any one god."
        • Olivia: "So I'm definitely not against religion. The opposite in fact. I just have my own relationship with it. If that makes sense."
        • Marcoh: "It does."

        • Daan: "Hey no reason to be mean."
  • If Abella is in the party:
    • Abella: "Just don't look down. Imagine the beams are only a couple of meters high."

        • Karin: "It's really covering everything, isn't it?"
  • If Daan is in the party:

Trivia

  • Collecting the 3 effigies and passing through the church passage is technically not required to reach the temple district, as the shortcut gate found in Prehevil - Shopping Street can be destroyed to gain access - however, it will be incredibly difficult to do so as it requires the player to somehow find a way to deal more than 4000 damage in one turn. It is possible to achieve this with various min-maxed party setups involving specific skills, buffs and equipment, such as using Spice forge to get Double Black Orb on all party members and maximising their magic attack stats.
