"What am I going to do when we finally escape all this? I'll probably start a small occult store somewhere. Somewhere FAR away from Prehevil... Maybe Rondon. I want to live somewhere busy. With tons of people around. People who wouldn't judge who I am or anyone else around them..."
- Marina

Marina Domek is a playable character and a potential party member in Fear & Hunger 2: Termina. An occultist that has refined her craft from a prestigious school, Marina focuses on the creative use of otherworldly powers, her abilities providing useful and unique buffs and effects. Marina is one of the fourteen contestants arriving in Prehevil that were forced to participate in the Festival of Termina.

Lore

Marina was born in the Church of Alll-mer within Prehevil, where her lineage practiced archaic but brutal and cruel rites and rituals in order to appease the old gods. Her father is the current leading Dark Priest.

Her mother was not an active participant of these rituals, and did not want Marina to follow in her father's footsteps. The life of a dark priest is cruel, entailing a lifetime of grueling servitude to old gods - a life which her mother wished to spare her from. Therefore, despite being born a boy, Marina would be raised as a woman, effectively shielding her from the obligation of priesthood.

She would grow up homeschooled near the church and follow an orthodox path different from that of dark priests. Her skill and talent in occultism would soon be noticed by the Ministry of Darkness in the Vatican, which offered her to study abroad - a scholarship of sorts to further her occult abilities. She eagerly accepted this opportunity to leave Prehevil, largely due to her father's scrutiny, judgment and apparent disdain for her very existence. Her mother, however, was proud of her. When departing from Prehevil, she chose to remain a woman, as she felt more comfortable that way, stating that it 'felt natural, so who cares'.

During her time in the Vatican, she refined her abilities in occultism for a significant amount of time, feeling as though she spent a lifetime there when she returned to Prehevil. She had to go back to that forsaken place somewhere in the Eastern Union after receiving a letter by her father, informing her of her mother's death. The circumstances surrounding her father's letter seemed suspicious, not only because the two did not share any sort of connection ever since Marina left for the Vatican, but also because his writing seemed very apathetic towards his wife's death. Marina suspected her father was involved - a suspicion fueled by her knowledge of her father's obsession with blood magic, whose rituals often demanded the blood of loved ones. She returned, determined to find out what happened to her family in Prehevil - secretly followed by a certain someone without her knowledge.

Little did she know of the greater scheme that was playing out, which would lead to her becoming one of Termina's contestants...

Personality

Marina is a curious young woman who speaks very informally. She often speaks her mind about any given situation.

As a former resident of Prehevil, Marina is knowledgeable about various parts of the city, and will freely share what she knows with others. She has an intense distaste for her hometown, and does not seem disturbed by the disaster that has afflicted it.

Despite the resentment she holds for her father and his status as a dark priest, Marina will appear conflicted by his death, though she states she is glad his lineage will end.

Character History

If skipped:
If not skipped:
  • The soothing sound of the railtracks... You are not used to such peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.
  • You can't help but let your mind wander. You reminisce what has lead you to this point in life...
  • You were born into the church of Alll-mer. For many generations your lineage took part in the most wicked of rituals only to appease gods of a forgotten age.
  • A life of a dark priest is a cruel one even if modern times overlooked the most archaic and ancient rites. A dark priest's life begins and ends in full dedication to the older gods. There is no place for self in the church.
  • You mother had different plans for you. She didn't want you to go down the path that would befall to every firstborn son in church.
  • So when she finally let your father know of your birth, she told him a daughter was born to the household.
  • You were dressed accordingly. Your distant and often absent father didn't get a wind of the original nature of things, or he just denied what was in front of his face. In either case, the subject was never brought up.
  • As you grew a little bit older, you didn't question this either. Everything felt natural this way, so who cares?
  • You grew up at the churchyard in the city of Prehevil. You started your religious studies at a fairly young age.
  • You were given an option to choose which studies you would pursue - Something completely unheard of if you had been a firstborn son of a dark priest.
    • Study occultism (Gain Engrave)
    • Study alchemy (Gain Alchemillia vol.1 and Alchemillia vol.2)
    • Study blood magic (Gain Necromancy)
  • You proved out to have great talent as an occultist and slowly even the holy city of Vatican and their Ministry of Darkness heard about your feats.
  • You were offered a scholarship at the Vatican City to further educate yourself. You took the position without hesitation.
  • Just the idea of getting away from your condescending and stuck up father was enough to make the decision, not to mention the obvious benefits the Vatican City would have to offer. Your home town wasn't exactly a bustling metropolis.
  • Your mother was very proud of you. She always was. Your father on the other hand seemed jealous of you.
  • Your father had always been antagonistic towards you and your pursuits. You were not sure if it had something to do with your origin or if there was something else left unsaid...
  • At the Ministry of Darkness, Vatican City - In the initiation ceremony all the new student would have to choose an older god that they'd let inside them. Who did you choose?
    • Gro-goroth (Gain +3 Gro-goroth affinity)
    • Sylvian (Gain +2 Sylvian affinity)
    • Alll-mer (Gain +2 Alll-mer affinity)
    • The moon god (Gain +3 Rher affinity)
    • Vinushka (Gain +3 Vinushka affinity)
    • The god of fear & hunger (Gain +3 God of Fear and Hunger affinity)
  • You affliction with the said god grew greatly.
  • Everything was going well with your studies until one day you got a letter from home. It was written by your father. This was very strange. You didn't have any contact with him since your departure.
  • The letter told that your mother had passed away. The words were cold and without sympathy.
  • You tried calling your home but the telephone exchange couldn't connect to any phone in the Prehevilian area.
  • You had a suspicion that your father had something to do with this. He had always been too obsessed with the blood magic and you had learned that there were too many rites that demanded the blood of your loved ones to work.
  • There was no other way. You had to prepare for a trip back home, to Prehevil.
  • How did you prepare for the travels?
    • Stock up on medical goods (Gain x2 Blue vials and Cloth fragment)
    • Get something to read (Gain a random skin bible - Skin bible - Gro-goroth, Skin bible - Rher, Skin bible - God of Fear and Hunger or Skin bible - Vinushka)
    • Stock up on food (Gain x2 Dried meat and Moldy bread)
  • How long has it been? Feels like a lifetime since you left the town...

Special event - Samarie watches Marina while she sleeps

If one chooses to play as Marina and sleeps on the bed in the Abandoned House, Mayor's Manor or the Book Store, Samarie will be watching her sleep, but will run away if the player chooses to not attack her.

As a party member

If recruited, Marina will have Pyromancy trick and Engrave skills learned, Knife and Collared blouse equipped.

Attacking the player in a hub

Marina will walk towards and attack the player character on the Train and the PRHVL Bop if they kill a contestant while she is present. This will trigger a fight ending with her death or the player's death. This event will not occur if the player kills Marcoh. (Bug)

Location & Recruitment

Marina will address the player character once they step off the train. If spoken to, she will reveal she is a local of Prehevil and an occultist if asked about the dream. She will then start carving a ritual circle at the train cabin, which will be available for use later.

Her location in the game afterwards changes drastically based on what the player does:

  • If the player opens the southern door of the upstairs bedroom or kills Henryk on Day 1 Morning in the Mayor's Manor, then she will be able move to the Book Store at Day 1 Night.
  • If Henryk turns into the Gentleman, then Marina will appear on Day 1 Night in the locked upstairs bedroom even if the Gentleman is killed before Day 1 Night. She can be recruited here, but will disappear from the party and wait behind if taken to the Gentleman, or disappear from the party entirely if the player changes rooms six times unless they sleep to Day 2 Evening or are playing as Levi.
    • If the player does not interact with her here, she will reappear on Day 2 Morning and stay until she moonscorches or is freed.
    • After being rescued and leaving on her own (after the southern door is unlocked) or disappearing from the player's party, she can be found being attacked in Prehevil - West (News Agency) if Weeping scope is present on Day 2 Evening, as long as she isn't in the Book Store or Mayor's Manor. She can be permanently recruited after saving her from this encounter.
      • If this scene encounter is active, Marina will also appear in the Book Store, resulting in two real Marinas being present in the run. (Bug)

Once Marina has moved to the Book Store, the player can recruit her by asking "What are you doing here?" followed by "I'm also heading to the church...". She will initially decline to come along, but upon trying to enter the Church of Alll-mer through the front entrance, Marina will change her mind and catch up to the player, joining their party as long as their party isn't full.

  • An unrecruited Marina left at the book store will be killed by Needles on Day 2 Evening. To avoid this, the player needs to either recruit Marina or kill Needles before progressing to Day 2 Evening.

It should be noted that if Weeping scope doesn't appear at Prehevil - West (News Agency), the player doesn't kill Henryk and the player frees Marina from the Mayor's Manor without opening the bedroom door, Marina will be gone from the playthrough until Day 3 Night.

Dropping Marina off at the Train can make her vanish from the game, making her unavailable for recruiting again. If Marina still disappears from the game until she moonscorches, it is likely due to issues with switches and variables. (Bug)

Strategy

Fear & Hunger Mode

Marina is able to attack twice, once with each arm, which can both cast one of two attacks every turn: Flesh puppetry and Black smog. Marina is not too difficult to deal with, although you should be wary as she can occasionally deal heavy damage if she manages to cast Flesh puppetry 6 or more times, and Black smog can be either a major inconvenience if a party member is hit or completely debilitating if it hits the character you are playing as - making the screen near pitch black.

  • Due to Black smog, it is not recommended to risk fighting her if you have no way to cure blindness or prevent it with a Bremen gas mask.
  • If unable to acquire any way around blindness, the next best method of dealing with her is to either take out both of her arms before she can cast to avoid the 33% chance to get hit with Black smog, or targeting the torso and taking her out in one turn if you can deal enough damage without any risk of missing.
  • Note that contestant party members will not fight until attacked, so you should have at least 16 agility for double attacks or a very strong weapon if you wish to take out both her arms or her torso on the first turn.

Masoχ-S/M Mode

Marina cannot be fought in Masoχ-S/M mode - see Cocoon.

Trivia

  • Marina's name, which is a feminine version of the Classical/Vulgar Latin name of Marinus, means of the sea, which comes from the Latin word, Marinus. In this context of name origin, Marina did go to the Vatican, which should be the fictional equivalent of Vatican City in Rome. The area is situated in the Italian Peninsula, which is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea on its western, southern, and eastern flanks.
  • When found in the Mayor's house she'll mention that it is a Tuesday, and will mention it is a Wednesday the day after in the PRHVL Bop. There seems to be no other way to check the current date of the events other than this bit of dialogue.
  • Marina is a transgender woman, and her identity as trans is occasionally brought up and plays a significant role in her story, mainly outside of the events of the Termina festival. Miro has furthermore enforced her identity in a comment thread on the game's itch.io page. [1]
    • Her character intro states that she was raised by her mother as a girl, to protect her from the priesthood that was mandated for firstborn sons.
    • She also states in the intro that once growing up and leaving, she chose to retain that identity as she felt a lot more comfortable as a girl.
    • Her Moonscorched form represents her fears of her father imposing a masculine societal role upon her.
    • When Samarie encounters Father Domek in the cutscene before she kills him, he misgenders Marina at first, before switching back to she/her pronouns.
    • If Marina loses to Father Oscar in Old Town, he will crucify her facing toward the cross, hiding her genitalia from the onlookers - likely out of some kind of disgust or contempt towards her identity.
    • Marina possesses the Changeling soul, the changeling being a mythological creature often characterized as a human-like shapeshifter.
  • In the demo, using the soul stone on her if she died would reveal that she formerly had an Enlightened soul at one point in development, similar to the dark priest Enki. This was likely before the new souls to Termina and the lore surrounding them were implemented.
  • When against her in battle, Marina's arms should have the ability to cast Pyromancy Trick, but in the game's files she has incorrectly been given the player's version of the skill, which requires 10 Mind points to cast. Her arms have a Max Mind of 0, meaning she is incapable of using the attack.

Warning! Speculation ahead!

Information below is hinted on, but wasn't directly confirmed in-game.

  • The other person in Marina's B ending photograph bears a strong resemblance to Samarie, though she is supposed to be dead in this route.
    • It could potentially be a is a Doppelganger of Samarie, since doppelgangers are known to mimic another person to replace them outside of the festival. There is also a chance that this person isn't Samarie at all.
    • Another possible explanation is that this is Samarie's ghost, and her desire to be with Marina is so strong that her spirit stays near Marina after death. Ghosts do exist in the world of Fear and Hunger, with all characters able to see them, and Marina's training as an Occultist would increase her connection to them.
