The Death mask is an Enemy encountered in Fear & Hunger 2: Termina.

Location & Behaviour

Death masks can spawn from coffins placed in the overworld after the player walks over the spawn tiles (as seen in Gallery) three times. Their locations are as follows:

At the start of a Fear & Hunger run, up to two random Death masks are chosen which will be able to spawn during a run. The two Death masks that can spawn in Old Town will not activate until the player has opened one of the entrances to the city. Specifically entering the Deep Woods through the broken shack, entering the Golden Gates, opening the Sewer gate or the main gate to the inner city. Their speed is faster than that of most enemies, meaning they can more easily catch up to the player.

In Easy(er) mode, Death masks are absent from the run.

In Masoχ-S/M mode, all six Death masks will be able to spawn without restrictions.

Strategy

Fear & Hunger Mode

The death masks are extremely tough because of their large pools of health and their ability to easily dismember limbs. They can use their swords to slash twice per turn, with each slash guaranteed to dismember limbs from characters without protective equipment (e.g. arm guards). They can also use a laughing move to drain Mind from the player's party.

It is better to avoid fighting them altogether; however, this will restrict the player's movement, as they risk causing a death mask to spawn every time they pass an unopened coffin. If the player wants to fight a death mask, they must consider that both of the death mask's arms have very high health, so removing them to avoid damage and limb loss is not a viable option unless the player has a full party with very high damage potential. The head also has high health, so the best bet is to blind the death mask using glass shards or black smog, ignore the arms entirely, and focus on the torso with status effects such as burn, poison and bleed to get through the health pool as fast as possible.

Alternatively, the player can attempt to eliminate a death mask without engaging in combat at all. Using the bear trap on a Death mask from outside the combat won't cripple their legs, but it will permanently immobilize them on the overworld, making it easier to either avoid them or outright eliminate them with firearms.
