"To be frank, that sigil has occupied my thoughts for the most part. I just need more answers... This quest for information is pretty much the only thing pushing me forward anymore at this point."
- Daan, at the PRHVL Bop

Daan, also known as Daniël, is a playable character and a potential party member in Fear & Hunger 2: Termina. A doctor with knowledge of both modern and occult medicine, his skill set is focused on curing different status ailments and analysing possible weaknesses in enemy anatomy. Daan is one of the fourteen contestants arriving in Prehevil that were forced to participate in the Festival of Termina.

Lore

Daan grew up in the Kingdom of Rondon, though the exact place of his birth is unknown. As a toddler, he traveled across Europa alongside his parents, followers of the Old God Sylvian. Daan's parents were members of the Bunnymasks, and he would often see them putting on rabbit masks while naked and heading to the meadows with others. Daan hated his childhood, for his parents prioritized their religion over caring for him. Their attempt to pass upon him the healing gift of Sylvian further emphasized their detachment from his emotional needs.

One day, his parents never came back after spending too much time in the meadows and succumbed to the ritual. Left alone at thirteen, Daan faced a choice: try for an honest living or delve into pickpocketing. However, fate steered him towards an unexpected path—an apprenticeship under a butler. Serving Baron Eihner Von Dutch, Daan developed a taste for the finer things and a mastery of etiquette.

Over time, he became acquainted with the Baron's daughter, Elise. They both would talk about his childhood and the madness brought on by his cult parents. The Baron was interested in the cult and how Sylvian's gift of healing worked when he learned about Daan's upbringing. In exchange for his knowledge of Sylvian, Eihner, a doctor himself, would teach him about the modern ways of medical practice. Although he would never have an official doctor's diploma, Daan would become able to give medical aid due to this apprenticeship.

As Daan matured into adulthood, he found love in the arms of Elise, blessed by the Baron himself. However, their romance unfolded during times of conflict between the Eastern Union and the Bremen Empire, drawing neighboring lands into the fray. Amidst this turmoil, Rondon enlisted all able-bodied men, Daan included, to take up arms and join the fight.

Choosing to serve as a medic or as an infantry troop, Daan bore witness to unspeakable horrors during the dark days of war. Letters from home kept his sanity intact but soon, the letters stopped appearing. After the Kingdom of Rondon withdrew from the war, he rushed back to his home only to find his wife Elise and Baron Eihner Von Dutch deceased in the basement. Occult practice had completely consumed the Baron and he had sacrificed Elise to conduct a ritual to a certain god unknown to Daan. Out of desperation, Daan attempted to resurrect his wife by trading his left eye in a ritual. Unfortunately, his attempts to save her were unsuccessful.

Daan was heartbroken and felt complete despair as he tried to uncover how they died and what ritual was being conducted - which was when he found a couple of mentions of a town called Prehevil in the Baron's documents. He packed up to seek the truth, unbeknownst to the fact that he was going to recieve a twisted reunion after becoming one of the contestants of the Festival of Termina.

Personality

Daan is a smart and inquisitive man who uses his medical knowledge and experience with the occult to help make sense of the world around him.

He is fairly independent, quickly setting off on his own to investigate Prehevil. However, he is happy to help others when the need arises, such as when he offers to mix drinks for contestants in PRHVL Bop. Daan can be found caring for the townspeople when not playing as him, and he is often polite and even caring towards the other contestants, indicating he has a compassionate side to him. Despite this, Daan can also be callous, such as when he refuses to put a dying man out of his misery because he is not bound by the Hippocratic Oath. Similarly, despite Daan's polite exterior, he also has a mischievous and condescending side. Karin takes the brunt of this, often the target of jokes or comments at her expense, but Daan also targets O'saa, and even the other contestants, on occasion. None of his jokes seem particularly mean-spirited but rather small jabs or a hint at a less friendly side to his personality.

Daan has an interest in bartending and mixology, which can be seen during his interactions at PRHVL Bop. Based on the player's descriptions of his drinks, he seems to have a talent for it. His signature drink, according to him, is an old-fashioned.

Though Daan is outwardly friendly, he suffers from severe depression stemming from the mysterious death of his wife, Elise. It is also possible that he has been suffering from depression for a long time, considering his traumatic childhood. During various party talks, Daan makes reference to the stress he has faced from his childhood, as well as he is shown to be protective towards the younger contestants like Marina and Levi, possibly a way for him to help other children avoid the same situations. One example of this is Daan refusing to let Marina drink liquor because of her age.

Character History

If skipped:
  • Gain Pep pills, Green herb, x2 (x5 on Easy) Blue vials and Moldy bread.
  • Gain Medicinal and Organ harvest skills.
  • Gain +1 affinity to Sylvian.
If not skipped:
  • The soothing sound of the railtracks... You are not used to such peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.
  • You can't help but let your mind wander. You reminisce what has lead you to this point in life...
  • Since you were a toddler, you had been travelling around the Europa with your parents.
  • Your parents were devout followers of the older god of fertility and creation, Sylvian.
  • Because of the nature of Sylvian's cult, in each new town you'd witness your parents putting on their rabbit masks and heading to the meadows naked with all the other cult members.
  • You hated this life. Your parents would be more concerned on the matters of religion than you. To make it worse, they even tried to pass on the healing gift of Sylvian to you.
  • From very early on you learned that no gift comes without a price. With Sylvian's "gift of healing" you saw how the mental state of your parents deteriorated over time.
  • They spent longer and longer times on the meadows. Until one day they never returned...
  • You were 13 years of age and alone in the Kingdom of Rondon. You had to do something for living...
    • Try to find honest work
      • A butler of a local aristocrat took you under his wing as an apprentice. You started working for the Baron Eihner Von Dutch.
      • You learned good manners, grew to appreciate fine arts and other perks that high class living brought along.
      • Over time you got better acquainted with the daughter of the house. Her name was Elise. She would be endlessly amused by your childhood stories and all the madness your past cult life brought with it.
      • The baron himself learned of you upbringing as well and was fascinated by Sylvian and her healing properties.
      • The baron used to work as a doctor and he had very different concepts for healing and mending wounds.
      • He taught you about the modern medical practices in exchange for your knowledge on the older god Sylvian. To be honest, his thirst for otherwordly knowledge felt a little bit obsessive even.
      • He taught you how you cannot cure any symptoms without giving something in return. To heal, something of equal value must be lost.
      • The most important thing learned is that you trade your life, your self in the practice of medicine. That is the price to save lives of the others.
    • Try to become a pickpocket (Gain +2 affinity to Sylvian and Loving whispers)
      • You didn't have any natural talent as a pickpocket per se and the underworld of Rondon was very rough on you...
      • You weren't cut out to be a street thug, so you had to rely on the only skills you had for the money... The healing gift of Sylvian.
      • You ended up starting a street praction of medical care where you'd heal people of all social classes.
      • You soon became surprisingly adept with the healing gift of Sylvian.
      • One day the local doctor and aristocrat, Baron Eihner Von Dutch came to your dirty office out of curiosity.
      • He wasn't familiar with the Sylvian's teachings. The modern medical care worked with very different concepts and methods where magic certainly wasn't included in the curriculum.
      • Nevertheless, the baron was fascinated by your otherwordly means of healing and was impressed by the results.
      • He made a proposition to you that you simply couldn't turn down. He offered to take you in as his apprentice and in return he only asked to learn more about Sylvian and other older gods.
      • You agreed and moved in to his huge manor. The first one to welcome you was the daughter of the baron, Elise Von Dutch. Something inside you changed that very moment as the two of you locked eyes.
  • As time went on, you became an item with Elise. Everything fell into place very naturally and even the baron gave you his blessing despite your background being anything but noble.
  • For the first time in your life, everything felt just right. But this wouldn't last for long as something terrible had been brewing in the Eastern Europa for a good while.
  • The conflict between the Eastern Union and the Bremen Empire had dragged many neighbouring countries to take part in the hostilities and the Kingdom of Rondon was no exception.
  • The kingdom was enlisting all able-bodied men to the frontlines and you had no choice but to pack your bags and join the Great War.
  • Because of your knowledge in medicine, you were given an option to join the army as a medic or pick up a gun and join as an infantry trooper.
    • Join as a medic (Gain Light blue vial and Pep pills)
    • Join the infantry (Gain Lugr Pistol and x5 9mm Bullets) (Lose Scalpel)
  • The war was cruel and inhumane. You had to take part in countless things better left unspoken.
  • The only thing that kept you going was the thought of your new family waiting for you back home. Every night you'd read letters from home and fall asleep to a photograph of Elise.
  • One day the letters ended. It was natural for letters to get lost in all the chaos, but you couldn't help your ominous feelings...
  • So when the Kingdom of Rondon finally withdrew from the war, you rushed straight back home as fast as possible...
  • The manor of Von Dutch was lifeless and dark on that gloomy day. You stormed through the countless rooms, but couldn't find a soul in sight.
  • That was until you found the basement door partly open. In the darkness below you could only tell apart the silhouette of a person who had died standing in the middle of swirling ritual circles.
  • The person was Eihner Von Dutch himself. He had died on the spot from what seemed like self-inflicted wounds and cuts.
  • Each corner of the basement had sacrificial gifts to an old god unknown to you. Your heart sank as you recognized just who was the main sacrifice of this maddening rite.
  • You tried to save Elise with any means necessary. You tried to exchange vital parts of yourself for the life of her, but that didn't work. You tried unspeakable methods for days, but it was all in vain. She was too far gone.
  • Occult had completely swallowed the baron while you were away and you could only guess what he had tried to accomplish with this unholy ritual.
  • Upon searching through baron's documents you noticed a certain place mentioned frequently time and time again. A town called Prehevil in the country of Bohemia.
  • The place had something to do with the beliefs of the baron and maybe there you'd find at least some sense to this madness.
  • It wouldn't bring back your old life, but frankly, you had nothing else going for you anymore. Only this small clue on what took everything away from you.
  • Answers... That was enough of a reason to get you back on the road. How did you prepare for your trip?
    • Stock up on medical goods (Gain x2 Blue vials and Cloth fragment)
    • Stock up on food (Gain x2 Dried meat and Moldy bread)
    • Stock up on alcohol (Gain Beer and Vodka)
  • It's been a long and mentally taxing travel to this point... You hope that whatever you find from this small town could give at least some closure to your sorrow...

As a party member

If recruited, Daan will have Analyze, Diagnosis and Magna-medicinal skills learned, Scalpel and Silk vest equipped.

Restraining the player

Daan will attempt to restrain the player character on the train and the PRHVL Bop if they kill a contestant while he is present. Daan shares this behaviour with Abella, Karin, Marcoh and Tanaka. Once the player is restrained, they will be forced to surrender, as struggling effectively does nothing. After this, the player will wake up, tied up, and be unable to move or act. For a while, they will only have the option to struggle in the ropes. After struggling, they will be given the option to give up and rest, up until Day 3 Night, in which the ropes will have mysteriously untied themselves. The player will be free (albeit with a very low hunger status) and every remaining contestant will have moonscorched by then. This will not happen if Daan is currently in the party, as he will simply ignore any contestants the player kills.

Location and recruiting

Daan can be first be found at Filthy Shack - Lake on Day 1 Evening, where he will be diagnosing a near-dead villager. He can be temporarily recruited here, but will leave the party if the player tries to go to Old Town - Mayor's Manor, Tunnel 5, Riverside or takes the Church of Alll-mer's elevator. He will stay within Old Town - Slums until Day 2 Morning where he will be looking at a moonscorched villager, potentially accompanied by Karin.

He will move to floor 2 of the White Mold Apartments in the room with the sigil on Day 2, where he can be recruited permanently. If spoken to while the party is full or is rejected, he will leave and won't be seen again until he becomes Pocketcat (Daan).

On Day 3 Morning, Daan will transform into Pocketcat (Daan) if not in the party, and can be found dragging Olivia's wheelchair out of the Museum. Otherwise, on Day 3 Night, Daan will turn into Pocketcat (Daan).

Strategy

"Let's slice and dice. No? I thought that's something you say in situations like this."
- Daan, when fought against

Fear & Hunger Mode

Daan's fight can be rather dangerous, depending on your luck. He has two attacks - Scalpal Ballette, with 90% chance to inflict bleeding, and Precision Cut, with a 95% chance to inflict critical state, the latter being a major threat as it cause the player's BP to instantly drop to 1 when damage is taken or healed. Daan has the ability to kill you instantly regardless of health, as if you get hit first with Precision cut, getting hit with Scalpal Ballette the turn after will both inflict you with bleeding and cause your body points to drop to 1, resulting in the end of turn bleed damage killing you before you can do anything. It is strongly advised to equip a Salmonsnake Rune to become immune to Critical State to avoid this.

As of v.1.9.1, a viable strategy is to cut off his left scalpel arm, as due to an oversight he will completely stop attacking the player. He is likely supposed to attack with the Slam skill when his left arm is destroyed, but strangely the switch that is supposed to enable Slam is only enabled when the right arm, the arm that actually uses the skill, is destroyed.

Masoχ-S/M Mode

Daan cannot be fought in Masoχ-S/M mode - see Pocketcat (Daan).

Trivia

  • Game creator Miro Haverinen has stated that Daan was born in the Fear & Hunger equivalent of real-life Netherlands, which has yet to be named and mentioned in the series.
  • Daan has a unique transformation scene after the time expires in the festival. He will receive a visit from the Pocketcat, warning that the inevitable is coming and start to encourage it by embracing the Moonscorch by giving his mask and the jacket to Daan, cue the ending of the transformation process.
  • Killing Pocketcat before he turns into him does not stop Daan from being transformed, meaning the player would have to fight Pocketcat twice.
  • Daan is said to have been followed by Pocketcat since before he arrived in Prehevil.
    • Although Pocketcat had talked to Daan before Prehevil and Pocketcat talks about Daan's motivations in his moonscorch sequence as if remembering Daan personally, none of Pocketcat's merchant or battle dialogue toward Daan seems to differ from the dialogue given other playable contestants.
  • Daan does not have an official doctor's diploma despite being considered the doctor among the contestants, as explicitly admitted by himself in interactions with Karin.
    • In the same conversation, he states he was an apprentice under an official doctor and is still able to give medical aid.
  • Pocketcat's room is changed after Daan is moonscorched. The room is initially filled with children's toys and burlap sacks with a crescent moon and star hanging from the ceiling, but after he moonscorches it turns into a crime scene with the crescent moon and star both becoming only silhouettes.
    • Some party talks between the rooms differ after Daan is moonscorched. It is pointed out that the crime scene feels staged, like a movie scene.

Warning! Speculation ahead!

Information below is hinted on, but wasn't directly confirmed in-game.

  • It is heavily implied that Daan has connections with Stitches and Needles, as well as their worshipped Sulfur God, though he is not fully aware of it:
    • When diagnosing the two enemies' corpses, Daan will note that Stitches resembles Elise, his late wife, and that Needles resembles Baron, his late father-in-law, despite their transformation.
    • Both enemies are speculated to be associated with the Sulfur cult, judging by their appearance and colour schemes which resemble the likes of Per'kele and the Janitor.
    • Daan's character history mentions Baron's apparent fascination with Prehevil, the city in which the Sulfur God is worshipped. It is implied that Baron sacrificed himself and Elise to this god.
    • When playing as Daan or having him as a party member in the battle against Needles, Needles starts to frown. This does not happen with any other contestant.
    • When playing as O'saa, Daan's dialogue in the white mold apartments have an option to tell him about the sigil on the floor. He insists that the player gives more answers. When told that the sigil belongs to the Sulfur God, Daan is disturbed by this and asks himself, "How could've he known of this god then..." The Sulfur sigil on the floor may be the sigil he found next to his wife and father-in-law, hinted by his disturbed demeanor and insistence on asking.
  • Pocketcat's room becoming a crime scene may reference Daan's insistence to find answers about his wife and father-in-law's deaths, with the crescent moon and star becoming silhouettes to indicate a muted connection to the Moon god. This can imply that Daan, even after becoming Pocketcat, harbors lingering feelings about his life as a human.
  • Since Pocketcat's nature is to meddle as ordered by the moon god, it could mean Daan is being meddled with so as to not fulfill a greater role.
    • Daan searched for answers behind the Sulfur god's influence on his life. The moon god is said to be a jealous god who interferes with other gods to prevent them from growing more powerful. As the Sulfur god is mostly obscure and obscurity causes a god's influence to dwindle, it could mean that Daan's actions to seek answers would have caused the Sulfur god to grow in influence if not interfered with by Rher.
