"Everything does feel like a dream, doesn't it? There is this ethereal feel to everything..."
- Olivia, when theorizing with the player about the dream on the train.

Olivia Haas is a Playable Character and a potential Party Member in Fear & Hunger 2: Termina.

As a botanist, her knowledge covers a wide variety of plants and herbs. She can create mixtures with strong healing properties or alternatively she can use that knowledge to create potent poisons. Olivia is one of the fourteen contestants arriving in Prehevil that were forced to participate in the Festival of Termina.

Lore

Olivia grew up in an oppressive household that was deeply religious. She and her twin sister, Reila, were born at midnight, at the cusp of the month, and as a result, they had different birth signs. Olivia's soul was Shadowed, while Reila's was Radiant, making them complete opposites since childhood: Olivia spent most of her childhood cooped inside for being of a more fragile build, finding escapism in books about botanism and nature and the company of her sister, who preferred to go outside and make friends while also dedicating herself to studying engineering and new age technology.

When she was fifteen years old, Olivia experienced several small strokes that left her bedridden. Her parents sought help from religious healers to cure her, but her sister pleaded with them to seek modern medical treatment. However, it was too late, and Olivia was diagnosed with a vascular myelopathy around her spinal cord that affected her blood flow. Despite undergoing numerous operations and medical treatments, she requires use of a wheelchair for the unforeseeable future. Olivia avoided discussing her disability and the reasons why she required a wheelchair, and she found the sympathetic stares from others to be uncomfortable and unwelcome.

Later on, Olivia and her sister both enrolled in a university in Bremen, relieved to escape their parents' religious control. Olivia found it challenging to connect with her peers, but she still managed to excel in her field and ranked at the top of her class. Reila also excelled and even had the opportunity to participate in an exchange program between the Bremen Empire and the Eastern Union, much to Olivia's jealousy.

After graduating, Olivia started her own botanist research in Bremen's largest greenhouse. However, she always felt that her sister outshone her in every aspect. Reila traveled the world and stayed in touch by sending letters about her work, but one day, the letters stopped coming.

Six months after, Olivia's parents received information that her sister had been accused of treason against the Bremen Empire and was being held in an undisclosed prison. Olivia was powerless to help, and the next time she heard of her sister was when news broke that a terrorist group called the Nameless Liberty Underground had helped Reila escape from prison. Olivia remembered hearing the name of the organization before. She recalled a passing conversation between Reila and her professor, who had mentioned them.

Desperate for answers, Olivia decided to investigate the professor's whereabouts, only to discover that he had been executed for treason several months prior. The circumstances surrounding his execution were suspicious, to say the least. Riffling through his office, Olivia found several letters between the professor and Reila, sent long after she graduated. In her last letter, Reila had sent cryptic writings about 'a cube' and how 'the Eastern Union was desperately trying to replicate the cube', her last words voicing concern that the Kaiser of the Bremen Empire was after the 'operation in Prehevil' and how she still had time to act by heading there herself.

According to her investigation, Prehevil was a medium-sized town in the country of Bohemia. Olivia would head there without delay.

Personality

Olivia is a reserved, yet outgoing woman. She is one of the only people on the train with openly friendly mannerisms and a caring personality. As seen in her party talks, Olivia is quite curious about Prehevil. She is talkative towards her fellow contestants, especially towards Marcoh, as the two develop a friendship during the festival. Being a botanist, she is naturally interested in the flora and fauna of the areas, and she works with contestants such as Daan to try to make sense of the laws of nature in Prehevil.

Though she will freely discuss her medical condition with others, Olivia is secretly very self-conscious about it. She sees herself as a "freak", and resents the fact that others pity her. In a party talk, she asks the player to let her know if she is a burden on their travels.

As the Festival progresses, she will grow increasingly anxious about the dangers present within Prehevil, as well as the growing threat of the Moonscorch.

While Olivia appears amicable and nurturing while journeying with her fellow competitors, there are indications that her character may be more ominous than initially perceived. For instance, upon handling a firearm for the first time, she recognizes that it empowers her to terminate life, and her body shudders with adrenaline from clutching the weapon, as if it were her innate calling.

Gameplay traits

Unlike any other character in the game, Olivia uses a wheelchair to move. As a result, she is unable to walk up stairs if chosen as the main character. Doing so will result in Olivia's character sliding off of the tiles. To combat this, she can unequip and re-equip her wheelchair with the C key by default. While her wheelchair is unequipped she will move at half speed in exchange for the ability to climb up stairs.

If Olivia enters a battle without her wheelchair equipped, she will be unable to use the Attack command until it is re-equipped. In combat, certain enemy attacks (i.e. Tackle) are capable of knocking Olivia out of her wheelchair, which results in it being forcefully unequipped. This applies to Olivia as both party leader or recruitable character.

Olivia as party leader is also able to roll down staircases to crash on enemies with her wheelchair. If it connects, she will have access to First Strike while the enemy is stunned, granting her party a free turn.

If one of Olivia's arms are removed, she will move considerably slower. If both of her arms are removed, she will be unable to move, prompting the player to quit breathing in order to cause a game over if she is the main character. No notable effects are present if she loses her legs.

Character History

If skipped:
If not skipped:
  • The soothing sound of the railtracks... You are not used to such peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.
  • You can't help but let your mind wander. You reminisce what has lead you to this point in life...
  • You remember moths, blue moths - blue noctuid moths to be precise. That is your first memory as a child. You and your twin sister sitting in the backyard, illuminated by the cold blue hue of the moon.
  • Instances where it was just the two of you, sharing a moment, were rare. That is probably why those moments matter you the most.
  • You and your twin sister were born at the strike of midnight, at the turning point of months. Thus you were born with different birthsigns.
  • One was born with a shadowed soul and one with a radiating soul.
  • Since that moment it was evident that the two of you would lead very different paths in life. Just as predicted, you were the polar opposites of each other from very early on.
  • You were fragile and weak in build, whereas your sister Reila was an active and adventurous child that could have easily been an athlete if she just chose so.
  • You stuck indoors reading books for the most of your time. Your sister spent her time outside making friends with other kids of the neighbourhood.
  • Despite your differences, you took solace from each other in the strict religious household you grew up in. One thing was common between the two of you - You both wanted out of the everwatching eye of your parents and their religious dogma.
  • You found escapism from the nature and botanism. Your sister, also being academically gifted, took interest in sciences. She would dedicate her time to new sciences that centered around advanced engineering and top of the line technology.
  • Her taking interest in the academia did irk you a little bit. As if she had stepped into your territory.
    • Give in to jealousy and try to outdo her in science (Gain Short circuit)
      • You decided to not give your sister the satisfaction of being the booksmarts of the family. You snagged her books and tried to catch up to her level.
      • Unfortunately you had no natural knack for the subject and had to force yourself to concentrate.
      • One night your sister noticed you reading through her books. You were afraid of her reaction. Instead she tried to help you understand the charts and diagrams better.
      • Noticing the stark difference between the two of you, you decided to give up on the subject and got back to studying botanism.
      • Getting back to the natural world felt like a relief and you realized that's what you were born to do in this world.
    • Stick to botanism (Gain Undergrowth awareness)
      • You decided to concentrate on your own doings instead of giving in to the jealousy and it quickly beared fruit.
      • While occupying yourself with the world of botanism, your sister would often quietly join your reading sessions burying herself into her own books.
      • Despite your differences, these reading sessions really created a strong bond between the two of you.
  • During your highschool years a disaster struck. You suffered multiple small strokes in a short period of time and was left bedridden. Naturally you were terrified by what could have been causing this.
  • Your parents first turned to religious healers for aid, but nothing seemed to work. Your sister tried to persuade them to seek out modern doctors, but your parents were slow to react to her pleads.
  • After getting no results your parents finally gave in, but it was too late at that point. The diagnosis was that you had an abnormality of the spinal cord that affected the blood flow and its supply.
  • You underwent a long operation in hopes of fixing the issue, but unfortunately things didn't go well and you were bound for wheelchair for the unseeable future. If something had been done sooner, maybe things could've been different...
  • What followed was an intense period during which you tried many different medical treatments, all for nothing. There was no escaping the wheelchair. Your legs did have some minor function, but they were left far too weak to carry your weight properly.
  • The world felt like such an unfair and hostile place after all you had gone through.
  • All this just further created contrast between you and your sister. You couldn't help but be envious of her. Her life seemed to roll forward without hiccups of any kind whereas you struggled with each step you took quite literally.
  • Nevertheless, the two of you continued if not on the same path, then on the same lane at the very least as you both entered the same university in Bremen.
  • Naturally you were studying botanism and natural sciences and your sister studied new computer sciences and engineering.
  • You both were tremendously relieved. You had finally moved out of your parents' sphere of influence.
  • Like always, you and Reila were the polar opposites. Why would have things been any different in the university?
  • You had trouble getting acquainted with other students, but your sister on the other hand was already leading the student council and was even getting very familiar with one of the university professors.
    • Try to steal the affection of the professor (Gain Recipes of the 15th Century Vol. 1)
      • Seeing how Reila and your professor exchanged looks made jealously rear its ugly head once again.
      • Not giving the two a chance to meet up, you insisted that the professor would come for a dinner with you. You had some important things to discuss...
      • The professor, while a little confused, did accept to your invitation. The only problem was that you had never cooked in your life. Lucky you had the university library at your disposal.
      • But alas, your social skills being what they were, nothing came out of it. It seemed like the professor and your sister were destined to end up together.
    • Just concentrate in your own studies (Gain Advanced botanism)
      • Just as you expected, your sister and the professor had an obvious connection. You were not sure whether you felt jealous for the fact that your sister garnered the attention from the opposite sex or that someone else was forming a connection with her.
      • Either way, you didn't think too much about it. It wasn't all bad anyway as you made good friends with the professor through your sister.
    • Expose the professor to his superiors (Gain nothing)
  • Your student life continued smoothly, you were constantly ranked top of your class and the nature seemed to lift its veil of secrets the further you got in your studies.
  • Your sister did even better at school. Apparently she was practically a genius in her field. She took part in a special student exchange program between the Bremen Empire and the Eastern Union.
  • She would get to see the world, while you were stuck on your laurels. Nothing new there you pondered.
  • In any case, the time had come for you to choose where you would specialize in your botanical studies.
  • You graduated, started your own research in botanism while also working at the biggest greenhouse in Bremen. What should've been a brand new start in life felt more like you falling into place to gather moss. Living your life through your sister's amazing tales.
  • Her research abroad seemed to open many doors for her. The Eastern Union hired her to work in top secret facilities around the central Europa.
  • You would receive letters from her frequently, always from a different country. She could never fully reveal what she worked on, but she did say that despite working for the army, her inventions would be for the better of mankind, not for war.
  • It all sounded incredible and you were genuinely happy for her. Really. Only the letters came to a halt all of a sudden. You wouldn't hear from Reila for months.
  • After 6 months, your parents got information that Reila had been accused of treason. She had committed serious crimes against Bremen Empire. That's at least the official story. By the time you heard of this she had already been in an undisclosed Bremen prison for months.
  • You felt helpless. There wasn't much you could do. The next time you heard of her was when you read news about a terrorist group called 'Nameless Liberty Underground' breaking her free from prison.
  • What had your sister gotten herself into? A terrorist organization? The news really bothered you. You had definitely heard of the 'Nameless Liberty Underground' before. But where...?
  • Then you remembered it. The professor Reila had been seeing during her school years had mentioned the organization in a passing comment.
  • (If exposed the professor before):
    • You investigated where the professor had gone after getting fired from the university only to find out that he had been executed several months prior. He too had been accused of treason and had been sentenced to be hanged in the middle of a battlefield.
  • (If not exposed):
    • You returned to the university to confront the professor. Only to find out that he had been executed several months prior. He too had been accused of treason and had been sentenced to be hanged in the middle of a battlefield.
  • Something weird was definitely going on.
  • You got to search through his office and found several letters from Reila. Apparently the two had been in a letter correspondence long after Reila had graduated.
  • In the last letter from her, Reila had cryptic writings about 'a cube'. Eastern Union had been 'desperately trying to replicate the cube, but to no avail'. Whatever that meant.
  • Reila was worried that 'the operation in Prehevil' was what Kaiser of Bremen Empire was after. 'There is still time before he could get here. I still have time.' Those were Reila's last words.
  • Upon further investigation you found out that Prehevil was a medium sized city in the country of Bohemia. That is the last known location of your sister. And that is where you decided to head without delay.
  • With a real adventure ahead of you, how did you prepare for the trip?
  • You've felt tense since the moment you embarked on this journey. Every night you'd see nightmares of the horrors that would wait you in Prehevil...
  • Are they just dreams? You can't help but feel that there is more to the dreams than mere logic would dictate.

As a party member

If recruited, Olivia will have Photosynthesis skill learned, Knife, Turtleneck shirt and Foldable wheelchair equipped.

Attacking the player in a hub

Olivia will be hostile toward the player if the player character on the train and the PRHVL Bop kills a contestant while she is present. Despite of the other contestants, as she can't walk, she will not try to reach the player and will trigger the fight only if the player talks to her.

Location and recruiting

For all of Day 1, Olivia can be found inside of the train with Marcoh and Marina (the latter disappearing on Day 1 night). She will express her concerns about the group's departure for Prehevil and request that the player searches for them to make sure they are okay.

On Day 2 Morning, Olivia will have moved to a grassy area outside of the train. Here, she can be given a wheelchair, allowing her to be recruited. She can receive a wheelchair in many different ways:

  • On Day 2 Morning, if Marcoh is alive, he and Tanaka will end up in an altercation with Pav in front of Restaurant Bílý Vůl after finding a wheelchair for Olivia. If the player intervenes in this encounter, Marcoh will survive and bring the wheelchair to her.
    • If Pav kills him, the player can collect the wheelchair Marcoh found and give it to Olivia themself.
  • If Pav is dead or was injured and taken to the train, Marcoh and Tanaka can be seen collecting the wheelchair outside of Restaurant Bílý Vůl, and will bring it to her without any issues.
    • Alternatively, if Tanaka is alive and Marcoh is dead, the altercation with Pav will not happen regardless of his status and Tanaka can be seen collecting the wheelchair without any issues. He will bring it to Olivia, and this will happen even if the event wasn't witnessed.

Note that if Tanaka and Marcoh die before Day 2, or if Tanaka dies before Day 2 and Marcoh is being played as, the wheelchair will not be obtainable, making Olivia unrecruitable.

On Day 3 Morning, Olivia will moonscorch into Mechanical dance at the Museum after being kidnapped by Pocketcat (Daan) if he transforms. Otherwise, Olivia will moonscorch into Mechanical dance in the Museum on Day 3 night.

Strategy

Fear & Hunger Mode

Olivia is a moderate threat in battle - she is not too difficult to defeat, but she should not be underestimated. Olivia will always attack twice per turn, using Drift tackle and either Toxic mist or Nettle mist (alternatively Flimsy kick if her left arm is destroyed). Toxic mist is usually more of a threat as the damage from the Toxic status will add up very quickly alongside damage taken from Drift tackle, although it should be noted that the Irritation status effect inflicted by Nettle mist can potentially be a permanent inconvenience if you are unable to draw a Sylvian sigil at an Asymmetric circle.

The most efficient strategy is to take out her left arm as soon as possible, as this will not only stop her from using her strongest skills but also make her head vulnerable to attacks, allowing you to end the fight instantly. Just attacking it will be fine, although Olivia will take 20% more Otherworldly damage so if you have access to magic skills such as Black Orb they will be especially effective. Note that contestant party members will not want to fight Olivia and will be inflicted with the Hesitation debuff, meaning that if you want to take minimal damage you will need to deal enough damage to take out her arm alone.

Another good strategy is to simply use Analyze to take out her head, or target her head with any damaging spell as you will have 60% chance to hit with it.

Masoχ-S/M Mode

Olivia cannot be fought in Masoχ-S/M mode - see Mechanical dance.

Trivia

  • Early concept art indicates that Olivia was not originally intended to be wheelchair-bound. Additionally, her initial design reflected a more contemporary aesthetic, as game creator Miro Haverinen had envisioned a modern setting for Fear & Hunger 2: Termina before deciding on 1942 as the year the game takes place.
  • If the players read her mind in the demo version of the game, they can find she finds herself attracted to both Levi and Marina, asking herself what is going on. This could mean that she was either supposed to be a bi-curious or bisexual woman. However, this aspect seems to have been removed, as such thoughts are absent in the final version.
  • Despite her upbringing, Olivia may tell Marcoh that she isn't religious (when talking to him in the Church of Alll-mer). However, she will reject being an "atheist", saying she believes that religion has its place despite her complicated relationship with it.
  • Olivia mentions being a vegetarian in one of her party talks, but considering the situation of the festival, she is willing to eat whatever is available at the moment.
  • Haverinen has mentioned that while Olivia faces additional hindrances compared to other protagonists, her gameplay experience not being drastically different is what inspired the development of Olivia's disability; it wasn't solely about diversity (although he harbors no objections to it) but rather about enhancing challenges faced by characters. Haverinen believed that being wheelchair-bound and navigating obstacles would add an extra layer of difficulty, akin to real-life struggles.
  • The fact that a recruited Olivia has Photosynthesis, a spell from Vinushka's Hexen, as well as being awarded a Skin Bible of the same old god if she decides to study folklore botanism while in college in her character creation intro, might imply that the academic institutions in the universe of Fear & Hunger have no problems mixing science with ritualistic knowledge.
