Strategy

Fear & Hunger Mode

The player can investigate the obelisk and attack it. The fight is not dangerous, however it will drain mind from party members at random. The fight can be escaped at any time (provided that you're successful) but finishing the fight by normal means is not feasible, as the obelisk has a massive health pool (999,999).

Talking to the obelisk is possible, but getting a response is not. Currently, there is no way to inflict any status effect to it.

If the player destroys the obelisk, the player will receive the message that they won the fight. However, the obelisk will continue to be in the same place, allowing them to fight again with the same result, making the act of destroying it meaningless.

Players can, however, fight this enemy for a potential advantage: they can use the encounter to make use of combat-only healing items (specifically, the Ring of Wraiths and the Betel's Stone). This is somewhat countered by the Mind damage inflicted by the obelisk each turn.

Trivia

  • Irrational Obelisk is one of the few enemies in the Fear & Hunger series that can inflict every possible phobia during the battle.
  • A interview mentions that the design of the Irrational Obelisk might originated as a artwork in a small art exhibition in Helsinki, Finland, and that the game's author Miro haverinen had a irrational phobia of it. Because Miro has retweeted his interview before, so it is reliable.

Warning! Speculation ahead!

Information below is hinted on, but wasn't directly confirmed in-game.

  • There is some speculation that the Obelisk is a delusion by the player; it is meant to represent the player's party attacking a regular pile of clothes to no effect, with the Mind damage representing the party being slowly driven insane.
