Strategy
Fear & Hunger Mode
Despite being capable of using weak attacks like poison darts, the player should not underestimate the cultist's abilities. If the party doesn't eliminate it soon enough before the next turn, the Owl cultist will begin to play their flute and summon the Owl sprite.
The major threat comes from the pecking attack from the Owl sprite, as it can use a Peck ability to instantly kill a member of the party by biting off their head. It is possible to dodge this attack if the player succeeds on a coin flip check.
If the player has 1 party member or an extra turn then the easiest way to defeat Owl cultists is to attack both legs and then the head, you will win every fight that way without taking damage unless you miss.
Masoχ-S/M Mode
The same strategy for Fear & Hunger Mode applies.

Player: “This thing looks to be human for the most parts. The long-neck mask part however doesn't budge. It's stuck by some unnatural means... The neck especially is a medical curiosity... You can't quite explain what has caused the neck to mutate this long. The body is protected by a light chainmail, so slashing and piercing attacks have little effect. The cloth would catch fire easily however and the person seems to be vulnerable against otherwordly powers.”
If Daan is in the party: “This thing looks to be human for the most parts. The long-neck mask part however doesn't budge. It's stuck by some unnatural means... The neck especially is puzzling me... Trivia
- Killing the owl cultists that are hiding in the leaves will reset the Moonscorch timer.
- As with Pocketcat, another animal-masked person who's a close follower of an Old God, examining an Owl Cultist's body post-mortem tells that their animal masks have melded into their face.
Warning! Speculation ahead!
Information below is hinted on, but wasn't directly confirmed in-game. |
- While not explicitly stated what the Owl Cultists are cultists of, it seems to be implied that they are cultists of Vinushka given that they live in nature with attire that mimics natural camouflage, as well as harnessing the spirits of animals.
- The Owl Cultist starts listening to Persuasion dialogue when the player shows empathy for the cultist not wanting to take part in the events happening outside the woods, then starts hesitating if the player talks about not being a disturbance if passing through quickly or about leaving the forest quickly. This implies a strong connection between the Owl Cultists and preserving nature.
