The Chaugnar is a Boss encountered in Fear & Hunger 2: Termina. If not dealt with properly, Abella will turn into Chaugnar due to Moonscorch on Day 1 Morning.

Location

If the player does not save Abella, it can be found within Tunnel 7 on Day 1 Morning. Loud bangs and noises will be the cue for its presence before she bursts out of a wall once the generator is turned on. It will reappear if the player enters the elevator in Tunnel 7, bursting out of the elevator shortly after the player and chasing them, regardless if it was defeated on the first floor. It will also reappear if the player goes to Tunnel 6 without defeating it. On Day 3 Night, it will not require turning the generator on to spawn.

If Needles is present within Tunnel 7, Chaugnar will not spawn.

On Day 3 Night, Abella will moonscorch and turn into Chaugnar.

If Chaugnar spawns and the player leaves that area then it has a chance of disappearing from that area, making it impossible to fight it in that location. This leaves the player with three chances to kill it after it spawns. (Bug)

Strategy

Fear & Hunger Mode

The Chaugnar can be a difficult encounter and is similar to the Crow Mauler from the first game. It has an instant kill move and high damage attacks, making it usually an encounter that should be avoided.

Each arm can perform Pummel, which does 42-62 blunt damage. After the first turn, each arm has a 1/3 chance of using Grasp of a giant, which will initiate a coin flip, upon failure it will lead to a death cutscene.

The head will use Doomsday trumpet that can kill anyone within 2 hits. The first hit damages the target for 28-42 Mind and inflicts Nausea 2. The second hit explodes the target's head, instantly killing them.

If the player cannot kill it within the first two turns, Chaugnar should be either avoided or dealt with outside of battle. If it is defeated on the first floor of Tunnel 7, it will still chase the player to the second floor, retaining its limb damage if engaged. (Bug)

Dialogues

Talk

  • Mucus and slime drips from the trout of the creature as it creates a whistling sound...
    • Player: [PERSUADE] “If there's any humanity left in you, please hear me out!”
      • It does look as if your words resonate with the creature just a little bit... Or is it only your imagination? (Skips 1-2 turns)
      • If repeated:
      • No effect. Your pleads are useless here.
    • Player: [INTIMIDATE] “Even a brainless brute like you understands pain.”
      • If anything, your words seem to aggravate the creature even more. (+Furious)
      • If repeated:
      • Your words don't seem to convince the creature.
    • Player: “Stay away!”
      • No effect. Your pleads are useless here.
    • Player: “I'll rip that disgusting trunk of yours!”
      • Your words don't seem to convince the creature.
    • Player: “There's no use talking to you is there...?”
      • The creature is charging towards you in the middles of your sentence...
    • Player: Nevermind

Player:
“You notice slow and steady breathing. The hulking creature is clearly still alive. It doesn't seem to react to your investigations, so it must be unconscious at the very least. Each muscle in its body is tense and stiff. Even if it's knocked out, the body doesn't relax. The body does look humanoid, but the muscle mass, the rock solid skin and the mutated head does make you wonder if it ever was a human to begin with. The tissue on the head especially looks alien. It is just speculation, but the transformation this creature went through could have started from the head. Maybe an outside organism could have attached itself on the face of this person? Regardless, the creature doesn't seem to have any obvious weaknesses. Only otherwordly powers seem to get through its thick skin.”
If Daan is in the party:

Trivia

  • The Chaugnar is likely named after Chaugnar Faugn, an elephant-like eldritch god created by writer Frank Belknap Long as part of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.
    • In the game data files, it is labelled as 'Big Boy'.
  • There are a few spots in the game where Chaugnar can be "shot and killed" despite it looking like a completely normal tile, although their functionality varies. (Bug)
