Strategy
Fear & Hunger Mode
Rancid can be a challenging foe, even with a full party team, as both of his arms have a lot of health. He has two normal attacks, Spear swing which deals 38-58 slashing damage and has a 15% chance to remove an arm, and Throwing spear which deals 48-72 slashing damage. This can be avoided by destroying an arm or his torso in the first turn, or by stunning his arms. If the player cannot avoid the damage, then it is recommended to equip any armor or accessory that offers immunity from arm loss.
At the end of turn 5 and every 5 turns after that, he will perform a coin flip, which if failed does 38-42 slashing damage to all party members and has an 80% chance to cut arms.
As mentioned above, Rancid will run from the first fight after one of his arms is taken off, meaning the player doesn't need to focus on attacking the head or torso. If the player damaged Rancid's limbs in the first encounter, they will remain damaged in the second encounter.

Dialogues
Battle start
- Rancid the Sergal: “Mataneko-kone-Magnificat. That is my name. The last name you hear before heads start to roll! My blood is rushing WIIILLLD!”
- If player is O'saa:
- You hear voices echoing from the beheaded wizard...
- Nas'hrah: “This creature is a sergal. Usually they appear more intelligent, but I've heard of cases where madness slowly deteriorates their sanity in certain circumstances. This lunatic must be one of those.”
- If encountered for the 2nd time:
- Rancid the Sergal: “Round 2! See this spear? It's the very same that beheaded that half-god over there! What do you reckon it'll do to soft human skin!?”
Talk
- Rancid the Sergal: “Let's howl while we slice each other to pieces! A sergal never backs down from a chance to bask in euphoric mutilation!”
- Player: [PERSUADE] “I'm not a warrior, there is no challenge to be had here!”
- Rancid the Sergal: “Not a warrior? With that much begging and pleading you're just a spineless worm! No matter - a warrior or a worm, both falter under my spear. Let's get this over with fast then!” The sergal became reckless. Looks like the beast is trying to finish the fight fast now. (+Reckless)
- Player: [INTIMIDATE] “I don't deal with animals, but this once I'll put you down.”
- Rancid the Sergal: “Animal!? ANIMAL!? A bald, testicle looking ape here dares to call me an animal!? That's the first mistake, the last mistake!” The sergal became furious. (+Furious)
- If repeated:
- Rancid the Sergal: “Animal...? Preposterous! Filthy hairless monkey!”
- Player: “I don't want any part in this!”
- Rancid the Sergal: “Nonsense! You'll feel the blood rushing soon enough! It's intoxicating!”
- Player: “What are you even?”
- Rancid the Sergal: “What? I'm from the proud race of sergals of course! We live to die on a battlefield. I do not blame you for not having heard of us. Not many live to tell the tales.”
- Player: “Let's see how much you enjoy it once we're done here.”
- Rancid the Sergal: “That's more like it! The blood will spill wild!”
- If encountered for the 2nd time:
- Player: [PERSUADE] “You're missing real battlefield at the town!”
- Rancid the Sergal: “What are you talking about? The town? I don't step inside those filthy human cesspools anymore. I saw enough!”
- Player: “I thought you were looking for the ultimate challenge?”
- Rancid the Sergal: “... That so? I say fuck it! Let's get this over with fast then!” The sergal became reckless. Looks like the beast is trying to finish the fight fast now. (+Reckless)
- Player: “You're missing out on all the battles.”
- Rancid the Sergal: “... That so? I say fuck it! Let's get this over with fast then!” The sergal became reckless. Looks like the beast is trying to finish the fight fast now. (+Reckless)

- Rancid the Sergal: “Enough talking! Let's get this over with!”

Trivia
- In the real world, sergals are a fictional race of creatures hailing from the science-fantasy webcomic Vilous. After initially name-dropping the species in Fear & Hunger with the Sergal spear -- where it was nothing more than a simple homage to the YouTuber Neco the Sergal -- Miro Haverinen found the concept of further developing the species too tempting to ignore, resulting in the creation of Rancid.[1]
- Just like Rancid, the sergals in Vilous are canine creatures with shark-shaped heads; however, the similarities mostly end there, with Miro himself admitting that Fear & Hunger sergals barely have anything to do with the originals.[2] However, Miro also admitted that several of Rancid's original concepts were scrapped after reaching out to the Vilous creators by their request, so as to respect their original vision.[3]
- Although Neco the Sergal inspired Miro to include sergals in the Fear & Hunger universe, Rancid was not at all inspired by their original sergal character, also named Neco.[4]
Warning! Speculation ahead!
Information below is hinted on, but wasn't directly confirmed in-game. |
- The meaning of Rancid's proper name, Mataneko-kone-Magnificat, or if it even has a meaning at all in-universe or otherwise, has yet to be confirmed. However, there is some speculation as to its components:
- Mata = mätä, Finnish for "rotten"
- kone = kone, Finnish for "machine"
- Magnificat = magnificat, Latin for "it magnifies"; specifically, a reference to the Magnificat, a common hymn of certain Christian denominations
- Together, these could be understood as "rotten machine god", a possible reference to the idea of deus ex machina (literally "god of the machine"): a story element that comes seemingly out of nowhere to drastically affect the stakes, similar to Rancid.
